The holidays are right around the corner – can you believe it?  While this season is a happy, spirited time, it’s also a time of family, reflection and gratitude. And many of us are moved during this time to give back and help others in our community who are in need.

Looking for something to get your giving spirit in gear for the holidays? Let’s celebrate Philanthropy Week together, November 13-19, 2011 – and Central Carolina Community Foundation is going to help!

In celebration of all forms of charitable giving in the Midlands, CCCF is giving away grants to THREE Midlands nonprofits and needs YOUR help in selecting the recipients of the Philanthropy Week Grant Giveaway!

How does it work? Through November 10, CCCF Facebook fans can nominate the nonprofit they would like to see receive the Philanthropy Week Grant Giveaway. The top nominees will be announced at the start of Philanthropy Week (Sunday, November 13) and followers will then have the opportunity to vote for their favorite. The three top finalists will receive grants of $1,000, $500 and $250, respectively. The winners will be announced Monday, November 21. See official rules for details.

So what do you do now?? Go to CCCF’s Facebook page and nominate your favorite nonprofit. Then, keep your eyes open for the list of finalists that will be announced November 13 and vote. Be sure to tell your friends!

Talk about a teachable moment. Include your children in the decision and take advantage of the process to help them explore what they care about and introduce them to the needs of our community and the different nonprofits and services available. Here are some tips:

  • Open a conversation with them about your community. What do they like to do? What do they care about? Are there nonprofits that correlate? Help them explore this.
  • Discuss your family’s history of giving. What is important to your family and why do y’all support the causes that you do? Engage your children with this information and ask them what they think about your decisions and efforts.
  • As a family, pick a nonprofit that you care about. Perhaps everyone could give a short explanation as to why they think the family should nominate their favorite nonprofit. Decide together who you’ll enter in the Philanthropy Week Grant Giveaway.
  • Stay tuned for the finalists and vote again as a family. Talk about the different nonprofits nominated and the needs they address in our community.
